Obituary of Betty B. Twombly

Betty Bowers Twombly, age 94, of Summit, peacefully passed away recently at Overlook Hospital.  Betty was born in Morristown, NJ and resided in Short Hills with her family for over 40 years before moving to Summit, 18 years ago.  She was a graduate of Penn Hall Jr. College in 1944, and New York University in 1946.  Thereafter, she continued to pursue her passion for the arts, completing graduate studies in music and fine arts at Penn State University.  From 1946-1951, she taught Kindergarten in Summit and New Vernon. Among her many charitable endeavors, Betty served as:  National Defense Chairwoman of the Short Hills Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; a member of the Paper Mill Playhouse Guild, the NJ Center for Visual Arts;a volunteer at Overlook Hospital; a part-time Sunday school teacher; chairwoman of United Thank Offering; and a member of the Women’s Guild of Christ Church, Short Hills. Betty was also a longtime member of the Short Hills Club. Betty is predeceased by her husband, Doane Twombly and son, Stephen D. Twombly. She is survived by her brother, James Bowers (Nancy), her two sons Peter S. (Nicole) and Geoffrey B. Sr. (Rose), and her five cherished grandchildren: Geoffrey Jr., Christopher, Kathryn, Elizabeth and William. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service to celebrate Betty’s life at Christ Church, 66 Highland Ave, Short Hills on Saturday, October 12, 2019, at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice in her memory would be appreciated.
