Aunt Lee has a lasting influence as someone who helped shape my sense of what it means to be a first-generation American.
She arrived here as a young woman shaped by German heritage and culture. From the start, this forward-marching immigrant embraced her new home fully, imaginatively, resiliently -– always learning, growing, exploring.
She and her late husband George were influential models for two Manhattan nephews who lost our dad (Lee’s brother). They had a lasting impact as models of sophisticated New Worldness.
Among the many qualities I admire are Lee's interest in public affairs, literature, fine art and her successful reinvention as a travel agent in the pre-digital age. She applied global awareness, logistics skills, resourcefulness, persistence, patience, enthusiasm and tact – skills that define her.
Genuine warmth and thoughtfulness were always evident. My mother, brother and I are fortunate to have had Lee as an influence, cheerleader and family unifier.
