Dr. Chester H. Jones Rutgers professor emeritus, Air Force veteran Dr. Chester H. Jones, 85, of West Orange, N.J., died at home on Aug. 30, 2017. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at Preston Funeral Home, 153 South Orange Ave., South Orange, N.J., on Friday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m. Interment is private. Visiting hours are on Thursday, Sept 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. For more information, please visit prestonfuneralhome.net. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Jones lived in West Orange for the past 60 years. He served in U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1954 during the Korean War. Dr. Jones was a member of the Rutgers School of Social Work faculty, New Brunswick, N.J., from 1968 to 1996. During his tenure at Rutgers he was associate dean for academic affairs, chairman of the administration, policy and planning department, and director of the undergraduate social work program. Dr. Jones was a professor emeritus at Rutgers University. He was an adjunct professor at St. Peter's College, Jersey City, N.J., and Kean College, Union, N.J. Dr. Jones earned a B.S. degree in social administration in 1957 and an M.S.W. degree in 1961 from Ohio State University. He earned a doctor of education degree from Rutgers University in 1982. He was awarded a National Institutes of Mental Health clinical training grant for support of minority students from 1988 to 1991. Dr. Jones began his career as a psychiatric social worker at the Juvenile Diagnostic Center in Columbus, Ohio, in 1960. He served as executive director of the Columbus Urban League, Columbus, Ohio, and assistant director, National Urban League, New York City. He was a member of the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (Mu Boule) since 1963, Kappa Delta Pi, and the National Association of Social Workers. Dr. Jones was predeceased by his wife, Norma Wall Jones; his son, Stephen Jones; and his brother, Gerald Jones. He is survived by his daughters, Leslie Johnson, Elizabeth Jones and Madeline Jones; grandchildren, Courtney, Adjani and Ashton; great-granddaughter, Mackenzie; and his sister-in-law, Sally H. Jones.
