Obituary of Norman Mayo

Norman Mayo, 89, of Millburn, N.J., passed away on April 25, 2015, at Runnells Specialized Hospital, Berkeley Heights, N.J. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the graveside service in the Presbyterian Cemetery, 101 Taft Lane, Springfield, N.J., on Friday, May 1, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held in the Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Ave., Maplewood, N.J., on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Born in Summit, N.J., Mr. Mayo was a lifelong resident of Millburn. He was an accountant with American Abrasive Metals in Irvington, N.J., from 1948 until 1984 when he retired. He was also assistant secretary and treasurer for the company. Mr. Mayo was a 1943 graduate of Millburn High School. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield for over 50 years. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II from 1943 to 1946 as a radar man third class, serving aboard "The Mad Hooligan" (LST 832). He participated in the Invasion of Okinawa in April 1945, and entered Tokyo Bay in Japan in September of 1945 after the peace treaty was signed. Mr. Mayo was also a member of AARP, American Scottish Foundation - New York City chapter, and the United States Landing Ship Tank Association - Ohio chapter. He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Police and as an associate member of FOP Lodge 70, Maplewood, N.J. Mr. Mayo was a member of American Legion Guy Bosworth Post 140 in Millburn for over 50 years, and was made a life member in 1986, and served as post commander for three years. He also served as a chaplain and adjutant and vice commander. Mr. Mayo served as vice commander of the Essex County Committee of the American Legion for three years, and the Essex County American Legion baseball chairman for eight years. He also served as state district chairman of the American Legion Department of New Jersey Baseball Committee for many years. He was the beloved son of the late George and Helen (Lockie) Mayo, and brother of the late George Mayo Jr. In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Presbyterian Church, 37 Church Mall, Springfield, N.J. 07081, would be appreciated.
