Obituary of Rev. Msgr. Kevin M. Hanbury, Ed.D.

Reverend Monsignor Kevin M. Hanbury, Ed.D., passed away peacefully on Oct. 1, 2012, at St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, N.J., after a two-month courageous battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Monsignor Hanbury will lie in state at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at Seton Hall University, 400 South Orange Ave., South Orange, N.J., on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will be an evening prayer for the Office of the Dead held at 8 p.m. His body will be transferred from Seton Hall University to St. Philomena's Parish, 386 South Livingston Ave., Livingston, on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, where there will be viewing from 2:30 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Philomena's Church on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 10 a.m. The principal celebrant will be The Most Reverend Edgar Da Cunha, S.V.D., D.D. Concelebrating will be Reverend John B. Baron, who will be the principal homilist. Other concelebrants will be his brothers in Christ. Following Mass, Monsignor Hanbury will be laid to rest alongside his parents at St. Catharine Cemetery, Wall Township, N.J. Arrangements are by Preston Funeral Home, South Orange. For more information or to send condolences, please visit prestonfuneralhome.net. Monsignor Hanbury was born on June 25, 1946, in Jersey City, N.J. He graduated from St. Nicholas Elementary School and St. Peter's Preparatory School. Upon graduation, he entered the Immaculate Conception Seminary at Darlington, N.J. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Newark on May 27, 1972, by the Most Reverend Thomas A. Boland, Archbishop of Newark. His first assignment was at Holy Family Parish in Nutley, N.J., where he was director of religious education. In 1975 he was assigned to Seton Hall Preparatory School, and subsequently to Seton Hall University, where he held various academic and administrative positions. He received his bachelor of arts in classical languages from Seton Hall University in 1968. He continued studies and received master's degrees from Fordham University and Seton Hall University. He also received his doctor of education in administration and supervision in higher education from Seton Hall University. In 2006, he was appointed vicar for education/ superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Newark, a position he held at the time of his death, by the Most Reverend John J. Myers, J.C.D., D.D. Msgr. Hanbury was predeceased by his loving parents, Raymond and RoseAnn (Doorley) Hanbury of Spring Lake, N.J. He is survived by his devoted, loving and caring brother, Dr. Raymond Hanbury and his wife, Patricia, of Ocean Township, N.J. He is also survived by his niece, Amy Hanbury and her fiance, Richard Piasecki; niece Kim Paglino and her husband, Joseph; and his great-nephew, Kai Reynolds. He also leaves his cousins, Thomas and Connie Muir and Peter and Gail Muir; the priest community of Seton Hall University, as well as the colleagues he worked side-by-side with in the Office of Education and Catechetics for the Archdiocese of Newark, as well as his treasured parishioners of St. Philomena's Parish, Livingston, N.J.
