Leslie William Gallt, 101, of South Orange, N.J., passed away on July 4, 2012, at home. The family will be receiving friends at Preston Funeral Home, 153 South Orange Ave., South Orange, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be an informal service at 8:30 p.m. to give relatives and friends a chance to share memories or stories of Mr. Gallt. Born in Catskill, N.Y., Mr. Gallt lived in Queens, N.Y., before moving to South Orange 14 years ago. He was an attorney in New York City who opened his practice in 1939 and continued practicing law for over 50 years before retiring. He earned a B.A. in 1934 from St. Lawrence University, Canton, N.Y., and his law degree in 1938 from Brooklyn Law School. A World War II Navy veteran, he served from 1942 to 1946 and was a lieutenant commander and port director at various stations throughout the world. He was instrumental in organizing The World Association for Orphans which placed children displaced by wars and civil unrest across the world. An avid skier, Pop was a founding father of the Telemark Ski Club which still operates today out of Brooklyn, N.Y. He skied until he was 95 years old. He was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor Johnson Gallt; devoted father of Nancy Gallt Virden and Lois Gallt Accardi; loving grandfather of Emily and Sam Virden, David and Katie Accardi, and dear cousin of Clinton Abrams.
