Obituary of Alice Hall Altus

Township resident Alice Hall Altus, 100, passed away June 20th. Graveside service and burial will be held at Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery.
Mrs. Altus was born in 1912 in West Pittston, Pa. She was a resident of Millburn for 63 years and spent her winters in Pompano Beach, Fla., for more than 35 years.
She graduated from Jefferson College Nursing School in 1934 and worked in New York City hospitals until she entered the Army in 1942. Mrs. Altus served as the Chief Nurse of the Army Hospital Trains Unit which transferred World War II's wounded soldiers arriving on transport ships in New York Harbor to hospitals throughout the country for treatment. She met her husband, Nathan Altus, in the Army and they married in 1944. Mrs. Altus attained the rank of Captain and was honorably discharged in 1945.
She is survived by her brother, James Hall, of Harvey's Lake, Pa.; her daughter, Cynthia Tompkins of the township; her granddaughter, Jennifer Larner; and two great-grandsons, Brian and Matthew Larner of Potomac Falls, Va.
