Obituary of Lawrence J. Carew

Lawrence J. Carew, 78, of Maplewood, N.J., died on May 11, 2011, at St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, N.J. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect St., South Orange, N.J., on Monday, May 16, at 9:30 a.m. Interment is in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, N.J. Visitation will be held at Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Ave., Maplewood, on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. Mr. Carew was born in Orange, N.J., and was a lifelong Maplewood resident. A certified tree expert, he was the owner of Carew Tree Experts, Maplewood, from the time he founded the company in 1957 until 2007. His greatest love was working side by side with his sons. He retired in 2007 and his sons continued on with the business. Mr. Carew was a member of the N.J. Board of Certified Tree Experts and a lifelong member of the N.J. Arborist Association. He graduated from Paul Smith's College in New York and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was an avid big game fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman. The beloved husband of Claire Schatz Carew, he was the devoted father of Patti; Steven and his wife, Tricia; James; Edward and his wife, Beth, and Brian and his wife, Heather Carew; loving grandfather of Matthew, Daniel and Kevin Carew and Jamie Miranda, and brother of Robert L. Carew. In lieu of flowers, donations to Maplewood First Aid Squad, 129 Boyden Ave., Maplewood, N.J. 07040 or South Orange Rescue Squad, 4 Third St., South Orange, N.J. 07079 would be appreciated.
