Richard E. Lerner, Esq. of Maplewood, 78
Richard Lerner passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
He was born in 1932 in New York City. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1953 and New York University School of Law in 1962.
From 1953 – 1970 he held legal staff positions at the US Commission on Civil Rights, the New York City Commission on Human Rights, the Anti-Defamation League of B'Nai B'Rith and the American Jewish Committee.
From 1970 – 1992 he was Associate General Counsel of the American Arbitration Association. After retiring, he worked as a Securities Industry Public Arbitrator; ADR Consultant; Contributing Editor and Securities Arbitration Commentator. He also volunteered for 20 years reading for EIES of New Jersey.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Carol (nee Schwarz); children, Pamela Portin (Rick), Victoria Martin (Thomas) and Joanna Protono (Greg Price); grandchildren; Alexander Portin, Hana Martin, Benjamin Martin, Nicholas Protono and Cameryn Protono.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 30at 10:00 a.m. at Prospect Presbyterian Church, 646 Prospect St., Maplewood.
In lieu of flowers those who wish may contribute in his memory to: EIES of New Jersey, The Seeing Eye, Inc. of Morristown, St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center or Maplewood Memorial Library.
