Juliaette Marian Barradale Wheeler, 92, of Maplewoood, formerly of South Orange, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, in the Winchester Gardens Nursing Home. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 5, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the First Presbyterian and Trinity Church, South Orange. Interment is private. Arrangements are by Preston Funeral Home, South Orange, N.J. For more information, please visit www.preston funeralhome.net. Born in South Orange, Mrs. Wheeler lived there for 85 years before moving to Maplewood. She was a daughter of Edward Morgan Barradale, a former president of the Village of South Orange, and Vara Wheeler Stewart Barradale. Mrs. Wheeler was a 1934 graduate of Columbia High School and a 1938 graduate of the New Jersey College for Women (NJC), now Douglass College. At the First Presbyterian & Trinity Church, she was a church elder for over 30 years, serving on many committees; a church kindergarten schoolteacher for over 13 years, and was president of the church's Women's Association for decades. She also served as president of the Montrose Elementary School PTA in the 1950's. Mrs. Wheeler's interests were people and helping them, and family and travel. She was a descendant of one of New Jersey's early families that migrated from Connecticut to Newark in 1666, and cousin to George Washington. The beloved wife of the late Byron W. Wheeler Jr., she was the devoted mother of Marian W. Conn, Byron W. Wheeler III and Caroline W. Jacobus; dear sister of Alice Barradale Schaff and Stewart Dunbar Barradale; loving grandmother of Christopher, Caroline, Julianna, Katherine, Eva and Headley, and great-grandmother of Everett, Owen, Liliana, Cameran, Hannah and Zachary. In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Presbyterian and Trinity Church, 111 Irvington Ave., South Orange, N.J. 07079 would be appreciated.
