Nicholas F. Romano, 94, of Maplewood, N.J., passed away at home on Wednesday, June 10, 2015. He had lived in Maplewood for 53 years. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Church, 767 Prospect St., Maplewood, on Monday, June 15, at 10 a.m. Entombment is in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, N.J. Visitation will be held at the Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Ave., Maplewood, on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. For more information or to send condolences, please visit jacobhollefuneralhome.com. Born in Newark, N.J., Nicholas earned a B.S. in elementary education from Seton Hall University and a master's in education from the former Newark State College. He served as a radio repairman in the U.S. Army during World War II. From 1943 to 1945 he was involved in many battles across Europe, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Nicholas started out as a teacher in the Morristown school system after the war. He switched to the Dayton Street School in Newark, N.J., where he taught for 35 years. For the last 10 years of his career, he was a home bound instructor at the Boylan Street School in Newark. He retired in the late 1980s. Nicholas also worked part time at the Essex County Geriatric Center in Belleville, N.J., in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a member and former chaplain with the South Orange Elks and a Democratic district leader in Maplewood for 25 years. Nicholas was the beloved husband of Mary Melillo Romano; devoted father of Nicholas F. Romano Jr. and his wife, Annette, and Mary Fox and her husband, Tim; loving grandfather of Christina, Jessica and Nicholas Romano, and Joseph and Ryan Fox, and dear brother of Rose Murphy and Josephine Stack, and the late Mary, Connie, Helen, Carlo, and Stella.
