Alvina Pierro Gasalberti, 88, of South Orange, N.J., died on Sunday, May 8, 2011, at home. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Our Lady Of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect St., South Orange, on Thursday, May 12, at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, N.J. Visitation will be held at Preston Funeral Home, 153 South Orange Ave., South Orange, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. For more information or to send condolences, please visit prestonfuneralhome.net. Born and raised in Newark, N.J., Alvina resided in South Orange for over 40 years. She was a registered nurse and director of out-patient clinics at St. Michael's Hospital in Newark from 1947 until retiring in 1989. Alvina was in the Nursing Cadet Program at St. Michael's Hospital during World War II. While working full time she continued her education, going to night school, and graduated cum laude from Jersey City State College in 1976. Alvina loved painting, gardening, and was a self-taught pianist. She also played in a harmonica band that played at many health centers in the area. She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Rosay Society and a member of Women's Auxiliary at Nutley Elks. Alvina was the beloved wife of the late Raymond Gasalberti; devoted mother of Anthony J. Gasalberti, ND., Ph.D., Ann Marie Chesterman and her husband, Gary, Richard A. Gasalberti, M.D., Robert P. Gasalberti, M.D., and his wife Denise, Ph.D., Ronald M. Gasalberti, M.D., and the late Raymond M. Gasalberti; dear sister of Violet Albanese and Lorraine McGinniss, and loving grandmother of Christine Gasalberti, Ryan and Jason Chesterman, David and Danielle Gasalberti.
