Rev. Richard M. Nardone, 81, of South Orange, N.J., died on Sunday, March 27, 2011, at St. Catherine of Siena Nursing Home, Caldwell, N.J. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at the Main Chapel at Seton Hall University, 400 South Orange Ave., South Orange, on Wednesday, March 30, at 10:30 a.m. Interment is at St. Teresa's Cemetery, Summit, N.J. Father Nardone will lie in state at the Main Chapel on Tuesday from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Evening Prayer for the Office of the Dead will be held at 7:30 p.m. Arrangements are by Preston Funeral Home, South Orange. For more information or to send condolences, please visit prestonfuneralhome.net. Born in Orange, N.J., Father Nardone lived in South Orange for more than 40 years. He graduated from Seton Hall University with a B.A. in philosophy in 1950, and a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Toronto. He graduated with an S.T.L. (license in sacred theology) from Catholic University, Washington, D.C., in 1954. After being ordained in 1954, Father Nardone became a parish priest for over a decade, then he became a popular professor of religious studies at Seton Hall University for over 30 years, from 1968, until he retired in 2000. Father Nardone also authored a number of articles, and a book, "The Story of the Christian Year." He was a worldwide traveler, one of his favorite spots was Iceland, and he had an affinity for all things British. Father Nardone was also known for his dry sense of humor among his friends in the priest community. He was often known to comment, "We are not amused." Father Nardone was the dear brother-in-law of Peggy Nardone, and loving uncle of Marianne Nardone Telenko. In lieu of flowers, donations to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, Development Office, 590 N. 7th St., Newark, N.J. 07107, would be appreciated.
