Richard A. Smithmeyer, born on May 13, 1931, passed away Monday, April 28, 2008. A graveside service will be held at Acacia Cemetery, Buffalo, N.Y., at a later date. Arrangements are by the Preston Funeral Home, South Orange. After graduating from the University of Buffalo, Dick became a pilot in the USAF and achieved the rank of major before retiring. Dick was a longtime resident of Buffalo, N.Y., and Irvington, N.J., and a member of the Elks and the McGuire Air Force Flying Club. He will be remembered for his service to his country and his love of flying. He had a quick wit and sense of humor and supported many charitable causes. Dick had a great love for his late parents, John and Esther. He is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Butterfield and her husband, Eric, and their two sons, of Georgia; a sister, Kathleen Mook of California; brothers, Jack and Paul Smithmeyer of Florida; many nieces, nephews and good friends. He will be missed by all. We plan to see you someday in Heaven. The family asks that each remember Dick in their own special way.
