In memory of John, a radiant beacon of courage, wisdom and laughter. His generosity knew no bounds and his optimism was infectious. An adventurer at heart, wherever he went he left touching moments etched in the sands of time. We remember him as that young boy, forever laughing and swimming with abandon; a picture of happiness frozen in our hearts. As we offer our prayers to God who knows all life and beyond, we are comforted knowing that John's spirit is free and jubilant till we meet again on the other side.

I had the pleasure of spending time with Johnny because his father and I are long-time friends. He was a bright, intelligent, handsome, humorous, and an incredibly talented young man, proficient in performing and martial arts. We bonded over video games etc. But I was awestruck! The first time I heard him play the piano... At such a young age he was so skillful and elegant. It touched my heart so deeply that the memory is forever etched in my being. I will always be grateful for the time I spent with this wonderful young man and everything I learned from my time in his presence. I only hope in this time of deep sadness that his family can take comfort in his brilliance. I am incredibly saddened by your loss and I pray for strength and comfort for you. Jan & Olga

Dear Olga and Jen, let god give your strength and guide you through these difficult times.
We remember Johnny being there on the day when Sasha was born. We remember them growing up together, celebrating birthdays, jumping on the trampoline in Millburn, chasing each other with nerve guns, buggy boarding in NC, doing archery, Jonny playing a piano for everyone at New Year celebration, watching him take chess lessons, Jonny doing martial arts demonstration.
We are so grateful for the warm memories Johnny left with us. He will be missed every hour of every day. May there be comfort in knowing that someone so special will never be forgotten.

My dear friends Jan and Olga, I met my John when he was almost 8 years old, when he was painting his grandmother's house and he showed up with his sweet smile, but the last 2 years where we had more communication and we cried and talked about God, and John likes that I talked to him about God and always had his sweet smile.

We got to know Johnny because of chess. The first time we met was on a evening train from NY city to Short Hills after a chess tournament between Christmas and new year ten years ago. My kids were glued to a video game Johnny was playing on his iPad and he did not hesitate to share with them as if they were old friends. They became good friends ever since and enjoyed his company almost once a week for a couple of years either in Westfield Chess Club or Chessmate quads or some other tournaments. They even formed teams together in K-12 scholastic chess tournament and amateur team east chess tournament and won trophies together (see the pictures). Since Johnny was a strong chess player, my kids looked up to him. Unlike some chess kids who were only eager to get ahead and never wasted time playing with lower rated kids, Johnny enjoyed hanging around with his friends regardless of their chess ratings. Johnny was kind, smart, sunny, funny, and good natured and he will be remember by us in that way forever. May Johnny Rest in Peace. May God give Olga and her family the strength to overcome the invaluable loss.

John was a celebrity at MMS. I was his 8th grade math teacher and his biggest fan. He came to class each day eager to learn and ready to work. He had no fear of the unknown and was always smiling. He would rally the class to work hard and be good! He was always respectful, kind, polite, and intelligent - an absolute gem. I am terribly saddened that the rest of the world will miss out on John's gifts. Those at MMS who never personally met John will remember the boy who did back flips on the field during fire drills. His positive energy was contagious, and you couldn't help but feel happy around him. His memory will carry on as we tell his stories and keep his spirit alive in our hearts.

John was a student in my freshman English class. John Cartier was one of the talented students of Chess Mates, Rahway NJ. He was natural in chess, good observer, patient, fighter, and fun to be around! I wanted him to continue in chess but he got busy. He expressed interest in going back in playing serious chess according to his mother before he passed. His mother, mutual friends, and I became good friends. Thank you Olga and wish you strength. Rest and Peach, John!

Deepest condolences from the entire Gedman’s Black Belt Family. John was such a kind-hearted and humble young man who brought such great energy to everyone he met.
